Caring for your Cork handbag...

March 7, 2018

You lucky duck! You purchased a beautiful cork handbag. A unique item as every single piece of a product made of cork is slightly different in its colour and grain.

You look good, you feel good, and you also did good, because cork doesn't only look amazing and is very long lasting, cork is also one of the most sustainable and eco-friendliest products around.

Cork products are a natural, organic, sustainable material that is soft to touch, feather-light but very durable and strong. After purchasing a handbag made of cork, you will find that your cork bag still looks beautiful after long time use.

How to Clean your Cork Handbag

Then, when you think you have it all, your kids thought it funny to draw smiley faces on your cork bag with a blue pen. Or your hubby was showing off his awkward clumsy dance moves and in an uncoordinated movement, soaks your new cork handbag in Shiraz. Not funny. Not funny at all.

But don't worry, you will be happier than ever that your handbag was made of cork.

While cork is naturally water- and dust-resistant, a coating of sealant (non-toxic, non-environmentally-harming) is applied to the cork in the final step of production to keep it from getting dirty. Cork’s chemical structure in its cell membrane allows the surface to be impermeable to liquids and gases.

And unlike its cousin leather, cork doesn't need to be conditioned and is easily cleaned with water and a small amount of soap. Simply clean any stains or awkward mess ups as soon as you can. Wipe your cork handbag clean with a damp soft cloth with a small amount of soap, with alcohol or even with baby wipes.

After a gentle rinse, air dry the cork bag and you shou

ld be good to go. You will see that cork bags are much more robust and easier to maintain than any other material!

Storing your cork handbag

So, now you know what to do in case of an awkward cork bag emergency, the way you store your cork handbag when not in use is also important to keep your bag in the best shape.

Try to store your cork handbag in a dust bag out of direct sunlight and try storing it in a position that doesn’t flatten or crumple the handbag, which helps retain its shape.

Over a long period of time, like any other genuine skin such as leather, cork might turn a tiny little bit darker due to contact with the human skin and sweat. The good thing is, your cork handbag will still look amazing. See it as a fashion chameleon and you will enjoy many good years with your favourite handbag by your side.
